What Happened to Pornhub, Visa, and Mastercard?

The announcement that Visa and Mastercard have both stopped paying Pornhub made international headlines in December of 2020. Two payment processing firms did not take the decision to stop the payments from out of thin air.

The decision of Visa as well as Mastercard to stop providing services to Pornhub is a result of a report published in The New York Times on December 4 4 2020. The article ignited an ember under Pornhub and brought attention to the company, and specifically to the content created by users.

Let's review the timeline of things that led up to the choice to "defund Pornhub" and then look at the consequences.

October 28th 2018 - Family members of girl share videos on Pornhub

Californian educator Dawn Giannini was arrested for assaulting a relative of 14 years old and then uploading the resulting video on Pornhub. The videos were discovered by one of Giannini's former students. She reported the videos to authorities, who then held the teacher on charges of 24 felony offences.

In January of 2020 the 49-year-old was sentenced to seven years in jail for her crimes.

October the 24th of October 2019 Missing girl is found on Pornhub

At the time of Christmas the 16th of December, 2018, a girl disappeared at her Florida home. While she was seen with two men at an area 7-Eleven a few days later, she didn't contact her family or make contact with her parents.

A year later, the mother of the girl was told by her daughter's classmates that they'd seen her in videos posted on Pornhub along with other video hosting websites. After providing the evidence to officers, 30-year-old Christopher Johnson has been detained on suspicion of committing a crime, and is currently awaiting a conviction.

November 13th 2019, 2019: PayPal removes itself from Pornhub

PayPal was the preferred method through which the majority of the creators registered on Pornhub were paid. The site even sang its praises for PayPal as a possible banking option via a blog written two years back.

However, the online payment firm abruptly decided to cease providing solutions to Pornhub. A statement sent to The Verge, PayPal announced that "Pornhub has been making certain business transactions through PayPal without our consent. We have taken measures in order to prevent these payments from taking place."

December 4th  2020 "The Children of Pornhub"

The journalist Nicholas Kristof published to the New York Times blog an opinion piece on the existence of pornography aimed at children on Pornhub. The child sex tapes were not the only accusations made against Pornhub. Reports of rape-related videos as well as non-consensual violence and revenge porn were reported and confirmed by Kristof.

In his article, in which he claimed that Pornhub is "...infested with rape-related videos. It is the place to make money from child raped videos as well as revenge pornography, video footage of women bathing in a bathroom, racist and misogynist material and videos of women being suffocated inside plastic baggies".

The article highlighted a number of women with sexual material they'd created for their partners when they were only 14 years old and uploaded to Pornhub. Women also had experiences of being trafficked posted on the website.

One of the most frequent topics was the re-emergence videos over and over again even after being banned when teens who were not consenting were removed. The reason for this is due to the option of downloading content from Pornhub which allows the upload of content to be repeated countless times.

December 7th 2020 - Investigating Pornhub by payment firms

After spending the weekend taking time to reflect on the issue and reflect, each Visa and Mastercard started their week with separate inquiries into whether they would like to establish a relationship with Pornhub.

The statement issued by Visa stated, "If the site is found to be in violation with the law applicable to it... the site won't be allowed to accept Visa payment."

Mastercard's statement reads, "If the claims are confirmed We will initiate immediate steps."

December 10 10th 2020 Visa blocks Pornhub payments

Responding to investigation initiated by New York Times, payment processing company Visa advised partners not to ever again cooperate with Pornhub. In a series of tweets on December 10th, the business referred to "illegal conduct" through Pornhub as the reason for closing their acceptance of payments.

The same day, Mastercard made the same move for the same reasons. In an official statement, the company stated, "Our investigation over the last few days has revealed the violation of our guidelines against illicit content on their website. We directed the financial institutions that are connected to the site with our network to end their acceptance."

"Exceptionally disappointed" was the official response from Pornhub.

December 11th 2020 There's no more Pornhub for Discover

Following the same path as its two main competitors, Discover stopped processing payments to Pornhub as well. The American-based company sent out an email one day after Visa and Mastercard announced their decision.

December 14th 2020 - Pornhub pulls content

Pornhub will remove any content that's not created by partners or models that have been verified. In a tweet posted on Twitter the same date, it announced:

"This means that every bit of Pornhub's content comes from verified uploaders, which is a requirement platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter are yet to implement. We at Pornhub our top priority is the security of our users is our primary concern."

The site's content has been reduced drastically. Prior to the changes, it was reported that there were 13 million videos available for search. Since the change, just three million videos have been hosted on Pornhub.

Pornhub, Mastercard, and Visa

It's obvious that there's been content that is illegal on Pornhub for years however, it's taken the demise of many methods to pay Pornhub to take action. There are many accounts of women who were successfully successful in getting unauthorised and untrue content that featured their images removed. There's no doubt that Pornhub was aware that there are issues with their website.

The future of the monetisation of the website is uncertain and there is a very limited method to make money for the content or for creators to accept payments and payouts.
